About Roboku

Roboku is an independent game by NycoHub SL, a small studio in Lleida, Spain. It grew out of the idea of combining two things we love: the clean satisfaction of a Sudoku and the charm of a mystery novel.

The idea

We were inspired by deduction puzzle books, where a few sentences about some characters and a floor plan are enough to reconstruct what happened. We wanted to bring that experience to a format you could play every day, on any device, with an endless supply of new cases and the guarantee that each one can be solved with logic alone.

How levels are made

Every Roboku case is built in several stages. First the map is designed: its shape, its rooms, its objects and its windows. Then the characters and the item are placed following the row, column and section rules. Next, clues are generated, one per character, and an automatic solver checks that with those clues the case has a single solution. If it has more than one, the level is discarded or adjusted. Finally, the difficulty is measured (how much each clue narrows things down on its own, plus the size of the map) and the level gets one to five stars.

We care about the details too: every character in a level has a distinct color, initial and look so they can't be mixed up, the cast is diverse in age and appearance, and the game is translated into twelve languages.
